The theme of this year’s water day is ‘Water for Peace’. World Water Day which has been running since 1993 attempts to raise awareness and inspire action to tackle the water and sanitation crisis in the world today. In light of the two current wars the conservation of water has never been so important.

Whilst we are unlikely to solve any wars in our daily lives here there are ways that we can prevent water wastage

1. Dogs generally drink one ounce of water per pound of weigh per day. Cats need much less depending on their size, age, type of food they eat and their level of activity

Consider a water fountain for your pets. These are especially handy for cats as it ensures a supply of clean filtered water and there is no leakage

2. Try not to place the water bowl or fountain near to your pets food or litter box as our pets (specifically cats ) are programmed not to eat food which is close to their toilet/water bowl

3 Whilst we as humans, are actively encouraged to drink as much water as we can it is different for pets. If you pets starts drinking more than usual it could be a sign that they are unwell

4. Amphibians and more “wet” pets do not drink water, but absorb it. Frogs, salamanders, and others in this category need water to absorb through their skin, and the higher that quality, the longer they will live

5. If you chose to bathe your dog ensure the temperate of the water is correct. This may prevent your dog trying to escape the bath and splashing water over the edge thereby wasting it. Also let the water run down the drain so it doesn’t get too high and frighten the doggo

However we use water this week consider how we can avoid wastage and help support water for peace. To make a donation go to our donation page

On National Love Your Pet Day. Most of us don’t need a special day to love our pets! We do it every day in little ways. However, do you know how your pets show us that they love us too? Read on!

You know the way your dog gets all excited when you haven’t seen him in like, 10 minutes? The reason that our doggos jump up on us and kiss and lick our face is to tell us that they love us and miss us when we leave. That crazy tail wag? Yip. That’s him telling us that we’re loved and appreciated.

Does your dog and/or cat want to share your bed? This is another way our pets show us affection. Wanting to sleep close to or on us means that our pets want to protect us from predators. In the case of a dog it means that he loves and trusts you and considers you part of the ‘pack’. You are the most important person in your dog’s life. He looks to you for guidance, approval, companionship and love. Animals feel the most vulnerable when they are sleeping (and going to the toilet. An interesting side fact!) so if they chose to sleep alongside you consider yourself the chosen one.

Does your cat often leave you little 4 legged (sometimes 8 legged ‘gifts’)? Your cat knows that you cannot hunt and they don’t want you to starve. Sure, who would feed them if you died of starvation?!! They are making sure that you get dinner!

When your cat or dog rolls over and shows you their belly they are showing you that they love you by exposing their most vulnerable parts of their bodies. Like sleeping beside you, they are trusting you when they are most vulnerable.

Cats head bop to show affection to their ‘person’. As well as used as an affectionate greeting it is used by cats to put their scent on you and to mark you as owned. I thoroughly enjoy being owned by a 6kg tuxedo diva!

This National Love Your Pet Day show a little extra love by making a donation to KSPCA KKSPCA Donation – Kilkenny SPCA . Your donation will ensure that the pets in our care receive all the love and protection that they deserve

We are a fully voluntary organisation, and depend on your donations to fund our operations, operations like this. We were recently asked to assist the Guards with the rescue of some animals from a property in Co. Kilkenny. Sadly there was a large number of dogs requiring help. As a result, the guards also asked another charity to get involved in the rescue operation.

On the day the rescue we transported some of the dogs and the guards transported the rest away from the property in question. Once we had taken the dogs to a safe location, some of them were picked up by the other charity the next day. From this location, all the dogs went to be checked by a vet to assess their conditions, and the vet then vaccinated and microchipped all the rescue dogs. Two of the older dogs that were rescues were also neutered to prepare them for rehoming.

After a few weeks, in co-operation with another SPCA we started to look at rehoming the rescued dogs. It took about two months to successfully rehome all of the dogs. While we were searching for their forever homes, the dogs recovered at boarding kennels.

The boarding kennels we use are run by an ex veterinary nurse. Her team assess the dogs from a behavioral perspective and reports back to us. This helps us to make sure that we can match the right dog with the right home. The boarding kennels also work with the dogs to socialize them and make sure they are ready to be rehomed. This way we give the dogs the best possible start with their new family. We are delighted to say all the rescued dogs have now found their new forever homes. A happy end to the tail for these furry friends.

Without your support, we can’t afford to run these rescue operations, or keep the rescued dogs in boarding kennels – which provide such important support in rehabilitating these dogs for their new lives. The bill for this rescue came in at over €6000! Each dog costs €10 a night in the kennels – this €10 goes a long way as it covers boarding, food and the socialization; which is a vital part of the journey to send these dogs on their way to happy homes. Like all charities, Covid has hit us hard and we haven’t been able to raise funds in the usual ways. If you would like to help us, please donate whatever you can, become a member or volunteer your time to help.

Each year the Department for Agriculture, Food and the Marine welcome applications from Animal welfare organisations for grant aid to support their causes.

There are over 200 registered animal welfare charities in Ireland, so application for the grant is competitive, with rigorous check in place to make sure the awarded charities are operating to the correct standards, and that the funding is being spent on animal welfare efforts.

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue T.D.,said “I am delighted to award this funding to animal welfare bodies countrywide, in what has been a particularly challenging year for the charity sector. These awards mark the largest allocation of funding to animal welfare bodies by my Department, and I am confident that the support will make a great difference to the lives of Irish animals.’’

We are delighted to announce that we were one of the 101 charities who were successful in securing funding from the grant process. We have been awarded €15,000 in funding which is vital for us to continue to do the important work we do. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Department for the grant support, both from ourselves and the animals we work hard to protect.
